The abandoned house that I really love is having difficulties coming into fruition. It's actually on California State Park land, and dealing with that is never easy.
First off, the house has been deemed hazardous, meaning they won't let anyone go in there for safety purposes. Although no one will be falling through any floors or anything like that, they say it's unsafe and therefore you are not allowed to shoot interiors there.
Frankly, it's a whole lot of bullshit.
They still might be able to allow me to do Exterior shots of the abandoned house but here's the catch. After purchasing a permit, I also have to pay a Ranger to sit on his butt and watch us operate to ensure we don't harm the land. Rangers make a solid $79 bucks an hour to simply observe. Anyone interested in a new profession?
It's a total drag because I love the inside of that house, but at the same time, this could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe I find another old, creepy house that's far superior to this one.
My location manager had me look up an old, abandoned motel that could be very fun to work with that's not too far away. Time will tell.

So what will you do? Use shots of the outside of this and interior from another? That's a good mentality to have, that it could be a blessing in disguise. Until youre on location and not getting the shots you want, then your Boston side will come out.
ReplyDeleteI suppose I can understand the hazard thing, there might be more than just structural issues there. But having a ranger watch and make sure you dont harm anything seems like a stretch. Imagine the look on his face when he finds out the camera runs on plutonium.
How are you budgeting out the labor anyway? Is it mostly volunteer with all expenses going to equipment? How the heck do you finance that?
Plutonium cameras are just so efficient these days.
ReplyDeleteAs for budget, it will be a mix of volunteer work and paid labor. A lot of the equipment will come our way hopefully through deals with people we've been able to make connections with. Like anything else, it's always about networking.
It's only a matter of time before the Boston in me comes out on the shoot.
To follow up on the "Freddy Krueger" house situation, just find a crack house and you will see some of the scariest shit in there. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't have the ability to use the property exactly the way you would like to, I would move on. I'm sure there are plenty of other options out there. I say keep looking.
